Asset-tracking technology provider Spireon has introduced its next-generation cargo sensor, designed to give motor carriers more detailed information about available trailer capacity.
The sensor, dubbed IntelliScan ProView, uses optical recognition technology and machine learning to provide percentage readings on how much of a trailer’s cubic volume and floor space is currently filled.
That data can help reveal ways for trucking operations to better utilize all their cargo space, the company said. For example, truckload carriers can find additional backhaul opportunities, while less-than-truckload operators can improve load cube planning and private fleets can better manage inventory in storage trailers.
“It used to be enough to just report accurate trailer load status, but today, with higher freight volumes and the lack of trailers, all carriers are looking for more trailer capacity,” Roni Taylor, Spireon’s senior vice president of strategy, said in the Oct. 20 announcement. “Spireon is giving carriers the ability to be more efficient and haul more freight with the trailers they have today.”
The ProView cargo sensor, part of Spireon’s FleetLocate asset tracking product line, also allows fleets to download images from inside the trailer.
The sensor is mounted at the rear of the trailer to provide a complete view into the trailer during the loading process.
Spireon was acquired earlier this year by vehicle lifecycle technology firm Solera, which also is the parent of trucking technology businesses Omnitracs, SmartDrive and eDriving. — Seth Clevenger
